THE RITZ-CARLTON, AMELIA ISLAND - LOBBY BAR

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Lobby Bar, located in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island reopened in December 2016 after a 45-day renovation. A waterfront hotel property, The Lobby Bar’s new design is inspired by the coastal heritage of the island and invites guests to dine and socialize in a more modern, posh setting. A specific design inspiration for the renovated space, with warm gray tones and light-reflecting wall coverings, is the oyster—a shellfish known for its rich taste and opalescent qualities. Open seating gives this area a communal feel, as guests are encouraged to dine in groups of all sizes or grab The Smoked Old Fashioned, their signature bourbon cocktail at the bar.

DESIGN GOALS & STRATEGY

What initially began as a soft-goods renovation turned quickly into a full re-design of the The Lobby Bar once the design team and the client realized the potential for increased revenue with the help of better design.

The client desired growth in The Lobby Bar’s business, which our team strategized to solve with design by increasing the size of the bar and increasing visibility by removing a wall obstructing it from the lobby. By removing the wall, the lobby gained views of both the restaurant and windows facing the ocean, while still remaining a separate entity from The Lobby Bar.

With budget and time constraints, tvsdesign worked to expand the bar to allow for more seating as well as add the dining component to attract more business. Inspired by the oyster—a shellfish known for its rich taste and opalescent qualities—abstract architectural design elements, anchored by the wavy, layered ceiling, organic warm tones of gray and iridescent wall finishes all were added to enhance the theme.

RESULTS

The Lobby Bar in The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island is now a modern and welcoming space where guests are encouraged to meet for food and drinks and relax. With touches of oyster elements placed throughout, the space now has a  distinctive spot within the hotel. The furniture and artwork throughout were thoughtfully designed to keep the space cohesive.  Soft lighting was installed to create the seductive intimate environment and compliment the materials used.

By increasing the size of the bar and removing the wall to reveal lobby and window access, the space is now more inviting and visible to guests—proven by a sharp increase in bar revenue within months of reopening. The open seating plan with layered tables created a more communal setting that was both posh and inviting. The coastal vibe is a hit among the customers, giving them a true feel for the luxury waterfront property.
