MATTRESS FIRM - BEDQUARTERS

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Mattress Firm, a high-growth retailer based in Houston, needed to consolidate two corporate offices into one scalable location that enhances productivity while providing both a reflective and collaborative space. With an average double-digit predicated annual growth, the alignment of Mattress Firm’s brand identity and organizational strategy with a strong real estate strategy was vital to achieving the organizations’ goals for success. To identify aspirations, vision, opportunities, cost and priorities for Mattress Firm’s new work environment, the tvsdesign team engaged in a 10-week Vision, Concept Strategy phase. tvsdesign conducted workshops with the leadership team at Mattress Firm and then issued a survey to every employee capturing preferences for space requirements, culture and work habits and amenities. Over 300 responses greatly influenced the vision and workplace strategy that resulted in the final plans for Mattress Firm’s new corporate campus style office.

DESIGN GOALS & STRATEGY

The client needed to consolidate their two offices into one corporate “Bedquarters”. They found the “almost” perfect space that fit their size and location requirements—but needed a complete interior overhaul. Commissioning tvsdesign to translate their visions into reality, the design team implemented a 10-week concept strategy phase to identify Mattress Firm’s aspirations, opportunities and priorities for the new environment. After surveying more than 300 employees, the design team created a plan that aligned with how they work best. This included elements like exposing natural light, creating open common areas and incorporating personalized touches reflective of the brand. Planning for flexibility, the breakout rooms, private spaces and alternative workstations were designed with the growing workforce in mind.

RESULTS

Rather than a typical corporate workplace, the client chose to pursue a corporate campus that showcases the company’s vibrant culture and attention to employee well-being. The resulting “Bedquarters” features access to natural light, flexible workstations that include both standing and traditional desks, collaboration spaces and private areas. Bright colors and untraditional features like a nap room, swings and custom art by local artists were incorporated to showcase the client’s robust and vibrant culture. Raw materials including concrete and plywood were used to reinforce the casual environment. Personalized touches, specific to their company and hometown are intertwined throughout.  Cloud-like light sculptures suspend from the ceiling at the entrance leading to the reception desk comprised of plywood and bedsprings. The central room features a super graphic cloud mosaic comprised of photos from team outings.  Stadium seating, a work café and coffee bar were also added for easier employee engagement.  The result is a fun, branded “Bedquarters” that captures the culture and brand values of the client, allows employees to do their best work and has the capacity to expand.
